What is the main difference between propecia and avodart?

Avodart (dutasteride) and Propecia (finasteride) are both 5 AR enzyme inhibitors - basically reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihyrdotestosterone - main cause of MPB.

Dutasteride is a much more powerful 5 AR inhibitor - 0.1mg is comparable to 5mg finasteride (or 5 propecia tablets). It hasn't been formally approved for hairloss but lots of people use it 'off label'. Reports are usually good but with any med there will be the none responders, side effects and doomsayers. Typical dosage is 0.5mg a day which is equivalent of 25 propecia tabs (not that it is 25 times more effective - as with all 5 AR inhib it is a law of diminishing returns).

Dut shouldnt be considered until you have given propecia a go for at least two years and then my personal advice would be to increase dosage of fin before making the switch. I take half a proscar tablet a day (2.5mg) which works out at about £10 a month.

i heard that sides are stronger too for dut.

thing i dont get is why avodart - dut was never prescribed and re-jigged into a hair loss product to compete against propecia. It aint made by Merck is that Avodaartt?

Who is on dut here anyhows?

Glaxo make avodart. Generic versions are made by CIPLA and Dr Reddy's.

The reason it never went to phase 3 FDA trials (and thus approved as a hair loss treatment )in the US was that propecia never turned into the money spinner that it was supposed to be (wasnt a miracle cure). Glaxo therefore decided that it wasnt worth the cost to develop another mediocre hairloss treatment - ie it will probably save your hair but cant do much once its gone.

Incorrect!

Glaxo make avodart which is their brand of dutasteride. Merck make propecia which is their brand of finasteride. Finasteride and dutasteride are generic drug names as is 'asprin' or 'ibuprofen'
