Having suffered from food allergies all my life, I never get any quite like this!

OK last night the face was still very hot, pain in left shoulder and arm, slight numbness in middle finger of left hand. Lying down to try to sleep I had blood pumping through my body which make you feel jittery, yes the heart sped up, ears pulsating and I have had about 3hrs sleep as I couldn't settle.

All very worrying when I was lying there very relaxed and trying to breath in a relaxed way.

This morning I feel pretty grotty. Little bit of numbeness in left middle finger, little bit of pain in shoulder. Face still roaringly hot. Ears still a bit weird.

Phoned NHS Direct. I'll not comment except to say a so called nurse said my BP readings of anywhere between 143/83 to 169/101 were not in her opinion considered dangerous unless I got the readings consistantly. I said I felt these were indicating mild hypertension, as per my booklet with the BP monitor and she disagreed.

She also suggested that measuring your own BP put BP up due to stress.

She then said "I see here it says Reductil causes sweats, palpatations, increased heart rate, hot flushes - all the things you've mentioned and I think you are just worrying unduely as these are common side effects of the tablets. I think you'll find the tablets are only just starting to kick in for you. If you are worried speak to your GP on Monday."

Doesn't fill one with confidence!

I am going to go to the health food shop later and try to get some hawthorn and garlic suppliments which help lower BP. I took a garlic capsuale last night but it didn't miraculously work.

I was a little surprised when I asked the nurse if she knew of any foods or suppliments which can help lower BP and she said "no not really, just exercise and weight loss. At 26st odd you are classed as morbidly obese and you should be reducing you weight."

Hi Moongoddess - I've been watching my BP, whilst not particularly worried, its a little above what I would like.

Try beetroot (either the food but preferably juice).  There have been studies that show that within an hour, BP is reduced.  There is some sort of compound in the beetroot that affects artery constriction etc.  Don't particularly know the details but you can google this.

I've just read up on that - thanks Gordy. Although the tests are not definative, it is worth a go, I think I have some beetroot.

I have not taken a red this morning and not eaten as I actually don't feel like it.

However, I know I can sometimes get hot flushing of the face if I've not had enough sleep - but that doesn't explain away the other symptoms.

I've taken my BP this morning and it isn't very high.

It's just scary.

I've taken the red and had a late breakfast. I don't feel a great deal better.

I have looked up about herbal suppliments and I have taken a garlic tablet, ginkgo biloba which I forgot I had and a vit E.

Garlic purifies the blood. Ginkgo helps reduce the stickiness of blood and Vit E is just good for blood pressure. I am also going to have a glass of Purple Grape juice which is a substitute for red wine for people like me who don't drink. It's good for blood pressure and the heart. I might get a hawthorn suppliment which is excellent for the heart and lowering blood pressure. Ginger is also supposed to be good.

Will also get some beetroots and green leafy veg when I go shopping. For now, I need to do cleaning and stuff as mum is home on Tuesday.

I'll keep the use of suppliments documented to see how things go.

Just to update this. I felt better during the day today. The body feeling jittery had stopped. I also have extreme wind and can't stop burping if I eat or drink.

However, about 2hrs ago the hot face returned while I was sitting watching TV - not exactly strenuous. My ears are hot and keep popping when I swallow. I have had a headache and my sinuses hurt.

Trouble is it is like an oven in here today and so I am just feeling warm generally. And yes I get these symptoms when I get a bug but the bug didn't develop last time which is what worries me.

Taken my BP again and yes midnight is when it will be lowest but even with this hot face it's still around my normal readings.

Do I panic too much? Yes I do when I'm over 26st and playing with my health.

Hiya Moongoddess.

Yes on Friday it was VERY warm.  I felt claustrophobic, kept putting the air con off/on at work, annoying colleagues.  I had sweaty pits (sorry ladies) and hot flashes.

I think if you stop the reds it will take a few days for reduced symptoms.  Something about peak plasma levels and drug half-life (its all very egg-head).  Relax as much as possible, breathe deep and slow (this slows heartbeat, in turn kidding the body into relaxed state) and drink plenty of water, which dilates blood vessels and cools you off.

Most of all, keep well, safe and look after your health for a couple days immediately afterwards.

I might go it alone for a month to see if there's any difference I can make with diet for a while.  Hopefully I won't gain, but even if I don't lose I'll still try to keep good habits.

Might live to regret that statement lol

Hi Moongoddess,
I love reading your diary and I always feel positive after reading it.  You seem to be struggling against so many things in your life, yet you remain up beat and positive.
I had the racing heart beat and flushes and stuff, I felt awful, the increased pulse makes you feel so on edge. Mine went up to 112 at its top, usually I'm 76 resting. It stayed high for a couple of days. I was taking an additional med to reds and it affected me. I too rang the NHS direct. I had a stupid Doctor who I could barely understand telling me I had gastric flu!! When I went into work later that week and read the report he had written to send  to my own Dr, they hadn't even got the right meds that I was on !! My Dr was appalled.
Anyway, have you been to see a dietician? if not can you ask your Dr to refer you.  There seems to be thing where you are not sure if you are eating enough or too much or the right things.  Everyones different. I can tolerate higher fat but no sugar, whereas others have to reduce fat more.  A dietician would be able to work out your exact daily calorie needs, and the best way to obtain them. It might be worth a try.
If you simply can't eat very much eat little but often to keep your metabolism up.
Best of luck
anna x

Thanks all for you input.

I went to see the doc today. I explained everything about what has occured and the doc was not unduly worried. He does want me to start eating a bit more to speed up my metabloism though. Still no surity on the weight front - though it seems like I may have put on about 3-4lbs in the last 3 and a half weeks - however, I am constipated and two days worth of food is still inside! 8-0 So I might have actually lost a little or stalled.

Plus as the scales do not weigh right I wouldn't know what is happening. Again he's not worried about this as the general trend is down.

The doc feels the hot flushes and palpatations will decrease with weight loss and he really doesn't feel these were due to the Reds but more that I am just 26st and my body will complain sometimes.

He admits it is scary and as he is actually mum's doc not mine, he is fully aware as to why I would panic about such a thing. He feels it is right for me to be concerned and to monitor BP when these things happen and all readings I got were not, according to him, something he would worry about - even the 173/101 because the general trend is around 142/90 which for my size and age isn't bad at all. I was a bit up this morning at the docs - 153/89 but didn't concern him enough to take me off the Reds and he prescibed next months box two weeks early!

I have also, many years ago been told that the most important reading of your BP is the second figures - the diastolic and that it is that one which is an indicator of heart troubles - I may have been misled but I like to see a good low diastolic figure and 89 is ok.

He also says he notices some physical weight loss - I've not seen him for two months!

So girls and boys, panic merchant I may be but even the doc realises it would be unnatural if I didn't given the circumstances.

Mum home tomorrow evening so I have muchos cleaning and stuff to do. Time to burn calories!

However, I have a real craving for Dairylea cheese on a hot half baggette! I don't even really like Dairylea!

yay for the visual weightloss. let that motivate you into NOT eating the dairylea cheese on baguette. not that i even know what dairylea cheese is but it's not sounding too good/low fat/nutritious. what about some avocado, tomato, basil and and lettuce in oyur baguette instead? that sounds tastier doesnt it.

Can I just ask a question? when taking your BP do you have a large enough cuff for your arm? it seems a silly question but when I was 20 stone the normal cuff was a very tight fit around my arm and the reading was always inaccurate and high (140/95) then one day my nurse produced a larger cuff, one that didnt feel like it was stopping my blood supply when just being placed around my arm and my reading dropped slightly, thankfully for me since losing weight the reading is now 120/75, I too have always been lead to believe that the bottom number is the important number, I still think this is the case as this was the number that was being watched when I were showing signs of pre eclampsia in pregnancy.
