Hello,
I just wondered if anybody could offer me some helpful information about taking this pill for weightloss post menopause. Does anybody know how it would work, if it would work as all I really want to do is loose a little bit of weight that seems to have attached itself after I went through the change.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thankyou.

Hi Judith, I too am post menopausal but didn't gain any extra weight. I have been 4 stone over weight for years and have recently lost 32 lbs on Reductil but have now come off it (sat 23rd Jan) because it has just been withdrawn (you may have read about it). If you go into the Reductil forum there are a lot of people on there who have taken Xenical before or considering taking it now they can't continue on Reductil. You really need to Google for info on xenical but basically it inhibits the bodys absorbtion of 30% of fat consumed. You would have to  follow a very low fat diet and you get very greasy stools even if you only eat a tiny amount of fat. I have taken it before and needed to be careful of little 'accidents', see Reductil site for other stories.
If you only need to lose a small amount of weight why bother with medication ? but whatever you do do it through your Doctor, it's safer. Have you seen Alli advertised ? it is like half strength Xenical and you can buy it in the chemist.
Why not just try slimming world or WWs, and exercise ?

Thankyou so much for replying with such fantastic information! I have always been slim and followed a healthy, low fat eating regime but since the change and my hysterectomy there just seems to be weight that is adding on week by week. I do exercise with a trainer and I go to yoga and do swimming but nothing is working or getting rid of it.
I know we all get slower as we get older but its really been getting me down, hence the thought of trying one of these methods.
I have seen all the posts about Reductil too, which is why I posted my question.
I have seen Alli also but I heard that too has a 'leaking' problem with it, even if you only consume a small amount of fat.
I will read up some more and I am going to see my GP next week for further advice!

Hi Judith, you are very welcome and I'm glad you are going to see your doctor. The only thing I can say is lots of people have been fine on Xenical with no nasty little problems ! so don't dismiss it out of hand, better to 'waste' the price of a prescription than go it alone and order on line for mega bucks !! and find it doesn't suit you. A good time to try it is, if you work, over a long weekend or if you're at home just stay close to home for a few days !!
Anyway the doctor should go by your BMI and assess your needs, you're doing everything you can so good luck and take care of yourself.

Hello Jay,

Thank you again for such a speedy response! Perhaps you should think about becoming a doctor as you are much quicker and know alot about these topics!
I am lucky I wont work, so I can just try it as soon as it arrives! I saw my gp today but she didnt seem to want to prescribe it for me, I have requested a second appt with a different gp.
What does BMI have to do with taking it?

Hi Judith, the Doc would normally check your BMI to establish your eligibility to be prescribed weight loss medication. It is the recognised standard now although there are some exceptions to the rule e.g. pregnant women and very muscle bound people like athletes. It is calculated by taking your weight - height ratio, (your age comes into it) and between 18 and 24 is deemed healthy and between 25 and 29.9 is overweight and 30+ is considered obese and so on. You can do this yourself online, just type in 'BMI calculator' or something like that and enter your height and weight (adjust to metric or imperial) and see for yourself. You may not qualify.
Have a go anyway.

Hello Elvisfan,

Thankyou for that information, I am now looking at my BMI calculator, it doesnt ask for my age though? It only asks for height and weight. Does that mean I am on the wrong thing?
I certainly am not very muscular either!

No Judith you are in the right place I think but some ask for your age and some don't, at the end of the day it's your height and weight ratio which is the most important. Let us know what it reads.

It says my BMI is 33, that is rather high isnt it? I am terrible worried and not sure if Ive doen it right or not.
It asked for my height and weight, is that right?

Hi Judith, sounds like you've done it right, did you try a couple of different sites and maybe like I did check my husbands ? his reading was spot on, he's not overweight but does carry a bit on his tum. Now this is not cut and dried because although his BMI is within the healthy range it doesn't mean he is entirely healthy !

This is what makes the whole BMI thing debatable and lots of eminent people don't believe it's a good measure because it doesn't take into consideration your SHAPE ie. apple, pear and whatever. The thickness of your waist has a lot to do with possible predictable health issues. Men apparently shouldn't exceed 40" and women 35" or they run the risk of problems linked to where their fat is stored.

So to recap, ones BMI might be good but the waist size could mean health issues are on the cards.

Now Judith, your BMI is high admittedly but you don't need to worry (or pay any attention to BMI) it will soon come down once you start your eating plan and continue your exercise. It's a typical BMI of someone who is 3 to 4 stone overweight and you'll soon get that moving !!!!

Please don't just take my word for it, google 'what is a safe waist measurement' and check out the opinions on BMI, they are very mixed but the Doctor has to use it as a rule of thumb.
