If I exercise full on - I mean anything more than walking or jogging, i get
bigger thighs. i know its muscle and it does look more defined, but
everything i wear just feels tighter on me. so icant see the point - i know i
should be getting my heart rate up, but walking does me fine.

big exercise just doesnt work with my body at all.

I would love to hear a pt instructors response to your legs getting bigger.  There must be a reason and a way to sort that out.

When I used to spin my legs got huge, but it's almost like they swelled then got really lean and toned... (then I stopped and they got flabby again...)

hey peeps

Im a PT and its the age old story from the majority of females that state, "I get bigger muscles if I do weights and the classic, I dont want to look like a man". Seriously, we cannot build bigger muscles, our bodies are not designed to, we lack the big quantities of the male hormone testosterone - so it is impossible to gain more muscle. However, you will define your muscle with weights and spinning etc and it will become more toned - but will not become bigger, unless you take a testosterone injection.
The other thing that is also my bugbear - we cannot change the length of our muscles, this is all predetermined in our DNA, the muscles are inserted at a certain point in the body and then they attach onto another part in the body - no amount of yoga, pilates etc is going to change that.

hope that helps!

When I did body pump often, a lot of women in the class would stick to lighter weights even though they could go harder.  I always pushed myself and man it hurt BUT!!! my muscles got leaner, the high reps made me tone my muscles like crazy!

hope this helps!

I had a personal trainer once for a bit, and he said it couldnt happen. But i
watched my jeans get tighter?! i find if i eat less, and just do light
exercise and occasionally some squats while im brushing my teeth that
keeps me small. if i sweat it out in a gym, i dont like the results. im not
big to begin with, so i dont feel i need to go crazy with exercise. but i
know its important for my heart etc to exercise.

i can only tell you what i see and feel! its my experience!

you can feel the difference when a girl works out though. A firm body is
better to touch than a flabby one! Although not too firm, a bit of squidge
is good too. Sorry, I sound fussy. I'm probably going to get in trouble for
this...

Hi Daisy, I appreciate it can be frustrating because you want to
manipulate certain areas of your body. It really does depend what
exercise you do: weight training sculpts you. If you're defined, some
areas might appear bigger, but I'm sure other areas will appear
smaller. Did you get a smaller waist with the PT?  Pilates gives poise
and is great for core training, dance (the best are Latin dance moves)
helps to burn calories and work the curves.

Keep it varied, don't work the same muscles over and over.

If just walking and squats works for you, and you're happy - stick to
that! walking is still good for the heart, if you're going at a pace.

hey peeps

remember you should change your workout program every 4-6 weeks to keep continually challenging the body so you dont platue - that means your body gets used to what your doing and you wont see the same results.
Plus remember all the LADIES - we need to do weight bearing exercise to increase our bone density, to hopefully offset Osteoporosis - which is brittle bone disease, as we age we loose alot of our important hormones and the bones are hugely affected by this, so weight bearing exercise is so important as the more muscle we have, the stronger our bone density is!
Keep on moving!!
