Today at the gym a pregnant lady was boxing with a trainer and I was training next to her.

She suddenly lets out "god it feels so good to box when your pregnant" she was ridiculously elated at her endorphine buzz and general release of aggression and frustration.

I have to say... I went to sign up for my boxing class again. You find inspiration everywhere!

hey peeps

Boxing is fab! One of the toughest forms of training, although during pregnancy is not very suitable due to the amount of impact required and abdominal strength - during pregnancy the Linea Alba seperates(this is the middle of the Rectus Abdominus(six pack) and its not really advisable to do Boxing during pregnancy as the abdominals do alot of work ins twisting and rotating and being the power house.

Have you tried Skipping Disco? Its another brilliant way to get the heart pumping and release those feel good endorphins!

I love boxing, it is my favourite exercise and it really poops me out! unfortunately in my recent boxing bout with my trainer I munch and hurt my knuckle (munch so hard you see, don't know my own strength! lol) anyway i chipped it which sucks as it is the best exercise.

Onto the whole boxing when you are preggars, I would be frightened to... am surprised the trainer she was punching with didn't advise against it...

Maybe she was still early or not giving too much impact??

Fi, what do you think about trainers that give bad advise?

The other day I was training with kettle bells and I took them from their usual spot to a mirror and i was told I wasnt allowed to take them from the kettle bell area... there is no mirror in the kettle bell area and I just said ok. when really I wanted to check my form as I was using them and am now a bit p*ssed off. what do you think?

hey peeps
Hi Issy, not fair that your not allowed to take the KB out of the area so that you can check your form...did they say why? Is it out of the gym or something? Perhaps if you write a little complaint to the general manager of the gym, and stipulate that it would be in their best interests so as Members arent at a risk of causing themselves injury...maybe that will give them the push to let you watch yourself.
As for trainers giving bad advise, its very hard as some people within the industry are unfortunatley not as clued up as others, I would always question a trainer about their qualifications and also, if they are telling you to do something - ask them why and ask them what and how it is going to benefit you.
With regards to their qualifications, in the UK, google search REPS - its the register of exercise professionals, and on it, you can search a trainers name and it will list(as long as they are registered) what their full qualifications are and when they achieved them. We have to do continious education every year to stay at the same level...so if you see they arent registered or have any insurance, then i would look for a different trainer.
Hope that helps!
Fi

PS...about the Boxing when pregnant...the first trimester is the most risky, no high impact exercise at all...and to be honest, Boxing is highly explosive and I would not recommend doing during pregnancy no matter what stage of pregnancy a person was in. There is a hormone called Relaxin the body releases, it is responsible for softening the joints and ligaments, so if somebody is Boxing whilst pregnant, they run the risk of permanently damaging these.

Good info Fi,

I just realised i wrote munch instead of punch... i think I was hungry when I wrote that haha.

Anyway it's frustrating when you hear conflicting evidence about certain things, you just dunno who to believe, that is why I know do a lot of research on my own and come on here and figure stuff out the best way I can.

that is interesting about what you are saying with pregnancy and high impact exercise, makes sense really.

I also hate it when a trainer comes up to me in the gym and corrects me when I was literally told by my own trainer and chiropracter the way i should do it.  frustrates me when some trainers are not as qualified as they make out.  Not just that though, i feel like i am pretty educated when it comes to sports and nutrition anyway, so sometimes they don't give us credit where it's due...

sorry rambling

ive only been to gyms a few times and ive never had a personal trainer or
anything. so when ive been sitting on the mat doing sit ups and stuff, im
realy just trying to copy the people around me who know what theyre
doing! i wouldnt have minded if someone came up and said excusre me,
youre going to hurt your back if you keep doing it that way. i mean, i
think if i was doing something that a) wanst going to have an effect b)
was going to do some damage - then i wouldnt mind. in fact, id kind of
expect and hope that someone would say something.
but thats coz i am v v rarely in a gym, so im clueless!

you kinda put it in perspective the daisy, if they don't say anything, they wouldn't be very good trainers...

always great to get a different perspective.

Yes, I would definitely need help. Fiona's instructions have been very
useful, I just can't go to a gym and see all the svelte people around me
and not get depressed! Id rather take Fiona's helpful hints and use them
at home.

Having said that I've kept up my yoga on Fridays, but that's somehow
different. The spirituality of it takes it to a different plane. I don't seem to
compare and despair when I there!
