Hi all.  Just wondering if anyone gets their supply of Intrinsa through the NHS, either via their doctor or through a hospital appointment?  If so, what have your experiences been?  I have my patches prescribed through the hospital and I am getting the feeling more and more that they don't actually want me to be on it.  I am getting warnings about not enough data on the effects of testorone on someone over 55.  My blood tests have to include a liver function test, cholesterol, kidney function, hormone levels - you name it!  I even suggested I'd sign a disclaimer but the doctor wasn't amused!

Sorry Oli,

i have only ever got my patches from ukmedix...

Why do you think the docs are being so weary about it all?

Disco x

Hi Disco, sorry for the delay - didn't realise anyone had answered.  I have a blood test once every 6 months mainly for the hormone levels.  Sometimes liver and kidney and cholesterol tests.  Once the testosterone levels were raised and it was a BIG DEAL to them and they took me off intrinsa for two months!  The nurse at the hospital took a blood test within two weeks of it being raised and it was back down again.  I booked for a pelvic scan which really hurt as I thought I might have ovarian or adrenal cancel, which indicates when tesosterone levels are raised in women.  Everything was fine.  My own doctor thought they were panicing over nothing.  The hospital make me feel like it's my fault.  It's obvious they don't want me to be on it.  They are saying at 57 years old there is no data to say what effects added testosterone would have on me.  There were warnings about heart disease, cancer - you name it!  But it's all speculation seen as how they dont have any data.  I am now under the menopause clinic as opposed to the sexual disfunction clinic where they were very good and encouraging.  I had a feeling that it was more personal with this doctor and that she didn't like me very much.

Have you decided to continue with intrinsa though?

The way gps are compared to conusltants at hospitals, in my opinion is so varied, i no longer deal with my gp, i simply go in and ask for a referral.  I have no faith in the gps i have dealt with in the past.

I hope that your new course of treatment works out for you and thanks so much for keeping us posted.  I agree, those pelvic exams are really uncomfortable.

Issy xx

Hi Issy.  Nice to hear from you again.  Entirely agree about the personalities involved with GPs and Consultants and it does depend who you get.  I will keep on with the hospital until, I presume, one day they will say I can't have any more Intrinsa. It does seem they are hell bent on finding something wrong with me that gives them the reason to dump me from testosterone patches.  I am still convinced the medics don't think testoserone supplements for low sex drive in women actually works that well.  My partner is fuming over their attitude and is asking if he can go along with me to the next appointment in sex months' time to add support.  I keep searching the internet for information on women taking testosterone supplements.  It's all conflicting but if I come across anything of inetrest I'll write to you all.  Take care everyone.

What is the NHS?  I've just registered on this site and have been using a compounded testerone cream thru my local pharmacy (previously 3 mth ago at a specialized pharmacy).  I'm 50 and have been using this for 10+ years without flack from my GP (male@40years old).  Every once in awhile I use a saliva kit thru a lab out of Oregan (their name escapes me, but can get it if you need it).  No liver, cholesterol or kidney tests are required, just hormone level checks.  Sounds like your Dr or the hospital are milking you or your insurance for as many test as possible, unless Intrinsa has side effects that warrant these tests????  I'm interested in Intrinsa due to the convenience of a patch and will check with my GP.  I DO hope you've had some acceptable answers and help since you posted.

Hi Donnasham.  You are from the US I see.  The NHS is the National Health Service here in Great Britain.  It's not privately run (as yet!)and we all pay for it through payments to the government.  I'm glad you've no problems getting testosterone preparations through your pharmacy without the big deal it is here via the NHS.  I am due to have another blood test soon.  For that they will be testing my liver function, hormones and even cholesterol levels.  I am sick of it.  I have a feeling the doctor I am seeing now at the hospital is hell bent on stopping me having the testo patches.  She says nobody as old as me is on it!  Never heard of a woman dying of excess testosterone - just having a beard though that's not fatal as far as I know lol !!

Hi I'm experiencing the same problems as you but I guess my biggest problem was I'm only 28 I have 2 kids and I havent had my libido for the past 6 yrs, no sexual thoughts or desires. I'm in a happy marriage so that is not the problem, I've been to see my gp several times to no success. Its only recently that I had my hormone blood tests privately to find that my testosterone is extremely low 0.3. Took another trip to the gp and it was the same response, I kicked a fuss and threatened to make a complaint and then I left. As I walked through my house door there was a call from the surgery saying they will be referring me to the hospital. At the moment I'm still waiting for the appointment but luckily I managed to get a private prescription for intrinsa so I can't wait to get my life back. Ill keep you updated.

Hi Trish, sorry for the delay I hardly come on this board any more since the posts faded away.  However good for you for sticking to your guns re the GP.  You are so brave.  The testo level is very low for a young woman of your age.  I'm not a professional medic but in my opinion no wonder your sex drive is down with a level of 0.3.  I hope the hosptial put you on Intrinsa.  Let us all know how you get on.  Good luck.  Stick to your guns.  Happy Christmas
