The top article in the Telegraph today is 'Dieting forces the brain to eat itself'. I was horrified on two counts: one, that dieting would do this and two, that brains eat themselves at all! Apparently dieters struggle to lose weight because a lack of nutrition forces their brain cells to eat themselves, making the feeling of hunger even stronger. 'Like other parts of the body, brain cells begin to eat themselves as a last-ditch source of energy to ward off starvation, a study found. The body responds by producing fatty acids, which turn up the hunger signal in the brain and increase our impulse to eat.' So now they've found a way to stop the cells eating themselves, which prevent hunger levels rising in response to starvation. So they are developing drugs to regulate appetite with this is mind.

That sounds like its going to be a powerful drug. Of course the body is going to react when it thinks its starving. The less you eat over time, the less you'll want to eat. It doesn't take long to curb your hunger. Eat your dinner off a small side plate instead of a big one. I bet after a few weeks you wouldn't want to eat a whole dinner plate full of food. But literally starving yourself - or deceiving your brain that you are not starving yourself - can't be good.

but some of us really do need that help - and if medicine can do the trick then why not take advantage of it? its so frustrating to be hungry all the time, and dreaming about eating food all the time. only when im feeling really ill with a stomach bug or something do i not feel like eating and that's such a relief. if pills can make you feel full all the time even when you're not eating then i would take them.
