Do the tests on the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association web site (snip - no links please) before diving in and buying any devices or products.

Hope that helps a little

I used to have a terrible snoring problem. I eventually had a Laser-assisted Uvuloplasty and that did the trick. 7 years later and I hardly ever snore now. The operation cost around £1500 then but it was money well spent. If nothing else works, might be worth looking into.

Good luck,

Richie.

what does the operation involve and do you have to be placed under general anisthetic?

I snore and i know that it has been driving my (new-ish) girlfriend bannanas. I am worried that she will use the snoring to sleep in another bed and uses the snoring as an excuse!

i have heard alot of different remedies..
apparently sleeping on your back helps the snoring process! i tied a tennis ball to my partners abdomin.. so he always sleeps on his stomach. its a bit weird i know.. but seriously i have now started sleeping.. its not to attractive.. but very effective. Basically it works because if 'snoringman' rolls over in his sleep its uncomfortable and he rolls back to lying on his stomach.. after a while you get used to the new position and dont need the lump in yah back anymore.. give it a whirl..

The La-up operation involves lying back in a chair while a surgeon removes tissue from the back of your throat with a laser. It's done under local anaesthetic plus the surgeon I had used some acupuncture needles - hard to tell what effect they had, if any. He said that they reduced stress. There was no pain at the time and very little bleeding as the laser cauterises the tissue as it goes. The most off-putting thing is the slight smell of burning!

Whole operation took about 40-60 mins and I walked to the tube afterwards and went home. They tell you to expect to have to use painkillers for about 2-3 weeks afterwards while your throat settles back down again and that was my experience. Warning - you can't drink alcohol for those 3 weeks, but you can eat and drink pretty much everything else - though I must say I stayed off the hot chillies for a while!

Links aren't allowed here, but I'm sure you can easily find providers of this op by googling.

The outfit I went to also offers another operation that  helps when your nasal passages are constricted because of things like a deviated septum - which I have following many years playing rugby. Effectively they use a laser to widen the nasal passages to assist with breathing. In the end I decided I didn't need this.

Like you, my snoring was driving my girlfriend bananas and me out of her bed. Now we're married with 2 children. It's probably no exaggeration to say that that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't had the op.

Of course, what you need before any of this is some investigation and diagnosis. So a visit to a doctor is the first step.

Hope this helps.

Richie.
