Wow I'm glad i'n not the only person who has smelly sneezes!! This has been effecting me for 10 years or so. I have never visited the dr's about this has it has never really caused me anty problems. I too have no other symtoms but for the past few months have had what feels like a slightly blocked nose and also a feeling of wanting to clear my throght. During this time i have sneezed much more than normal, up to 3 times a day all of my sneezes smell. I think its time for me to visit the dr's. how did you get on at the dr's??

do not what to be alarmist it could be con-incidence but as no research is being done i think i should share my story - started 6 yrs ago every now and then a smelly wet sneeze, the smell would last minutes a bacterial smell yucky, would only happen every now and then, in 06 early 07 the sneezes started becoming more regular, had CT scans results were nasal passages clear a slight thickening but nothing to worry about use rhinocort that will help, sneezes continued i was refered to an ENT who looked up my, nose down my throat in my ears all OK, then he felt my glands thou and behold hidden just below and behind my left year a small lump, i couldnt feel it he could, a lump, a tumour in the salivary gland (accina cell carcinoma) 90% cases benign, I had it removed 7 months ago and since then no smelly sneezes maybe a co-incidence but ask for your salivary glands to be checked out.

I have been suffering from smelly sneezes for at least 20 years now and like t19 have had head scans and various tubes down the throat but everything came back clear. I have suffered from sinusitis once (boy does that hurt) and my nasal passages are now quite small making them difficult to breath through (I'm told I snore quite loudly at night). One doctor offered to open my nasal passages with a drill and whilst I'm sure this is a very common and safe procedure I declined the offer. I feel the need to pick/clear my nose constantly but blowing it is pointless as everything up my nose is dry and this is quite irritating.

The doctors I have seen are convinced it is a nasal infection but have not been able to find it or cure it and after 20 years it hasn't got any worse or better apart from the closing nasal passages.

I used to give my granny a lift to the shops and back and in her old age she used to suffer a bit of incontinence. There is a very distinctive smell that goes with incontinent old ladies and one of my first smelly sneezes was in my car with my sister and we both agreed, it smelt like she was back with us (having passed on a year or so previous). So now you know, it's not a nice smell to have to live with.

I too have smelly sneezes, as do my father and brother.  My step mother
says she has developed them since being married to my father.  I have
never spoken with a physician about the situation because I just contain
my sneezes so no one ever has to smell them.  When I am alone, I sneeze
freely, most times they smell, sometimes they don't.  The strength of the
smell varies but never the odor, it is always the same smell.  Though they
are never as bad as my fathers.  My assumption is that it may be some
sort of non-harmful fungus or bacteria in the lungs.  just an assumption...

Similar to the above, my partner has had smelly sneezes since i have known him. I now have developed it.

Worried about sneezing in front of others! And with having very bad hayfever, it doesn't help!

i think it is very strange that i have developed it since being with my partner. They arent as strong as his yet though, his are so smelly i have to leave the room sometimes.

Would love to know what causes it to try and tackle the smell!

Back again. No change in my situation but just to confirm what Ilford said above, sometimes there is no smell at all but when there is, the strength of the smell can vary but the odour is always the same. I've been married for 10 years and my wife has not developed the problem and as far as I know, nobody I've ever met or worked with has developed it either.

When I was very young I used to stop myself from sneezing by suppressing it (like you do when you hold your nose and close your mouth when you jump into a swimming pool or to put it another way, like dropping a banger into a saucepan and putting the lid on). I didn't think much of it at the time but I'm sure I must have been doing some damage to my nose. Since then I try not to suppress a sneeze but I'm not a hanky man and sneezing into my hands is just so eeeeeoooo so shooting out of the room and sneezing away from the family is my only option . I've just had a full medical and have mentioned it again to the doctors so if I get any news, I'll let you know.
