Everyone I meet seems to have a really nasty cough at the moment. What is going on?? And noone - NOONE - wants to take antibiotics here. It's so weird! It's like this British stoicism... 'I'd rather suffer this chest cough for 4 weeks, then get it cleared up in three days with antibios.' Very strange.

yeah - what's up with that?? I have 3 friends who've been vomiting their guts up. Only lasts two days though. Very weird the things we pick up. Im off to Lake Malawi in a couple of days and Im sure I'll pick up all kinds of NASTIES! I mentionned I was go there at the travel Clinic when I picked up my malaria tabs, and the nurse warned me not to go in to the water. Apparantly, you can contract a disease called Schistosomiasis from the snails in the water! It's not pleasant. But the lake has scubadiving and snorkelling and various water sports. So people must be going in there!

It's true Lake Malawi is full of Schistosomiasis (also known as Bilharzia) but then so is a hell of a lot of Africa's fresh, standing water. They say that it's actually the second most common disease in the world after tooth decay! It's actually carried by flukes that live in (or possibly on) the snails. I've not been, but a few of my Aussie mates have. They had an amazing time. I heard that the water sports industry in Malawi has flourished because Bilharzia is quite easily treated with a course of pills. You can't prevent it, but it is easily cured long before you feel any ill-effects. I remember they all went for a screening when they got back, as it's a very easy one to pick up. Just what you need on top of all those vaccinations eh? Have a great one, see ya, Scotty

I was just emailing with one of my mates that went on the trip to Lake Malawi - weird coincidence that I was talking about him on this forum and then suddenly he emails me! That stuff always happens. He said that the bilharzia snail only exists in still water - so his advice was to swim where there are waves, and not reeds, and you should be ok. If you do swim, get tested, and take the tablets if you are infected. If you want to do water sports, don't worry - because the scuba diving etc are also out away from the shore, and the snail only lives close in. Anyway, he said when you get there, see that beautiful blue, warm water stretching out you won't be able to resist diving in!

hello peeps Great cure for getting rid of a bad cough i always use is local honey(a good spoonful), heat it up a little and add a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, the when it forms a paste add the juice from a lemon and drink it. Careful its not too hot tho as you can burn your tongue! It truly works, try it before bed and in no time your cough will be gone! Sorry I know thats nothing to do with swimming and scuba diving and peepee in pools! But the topic was cough epidemic! lol! Fi ;-0

hey there i know a great cure for coughs...its hot milk with a good shot of whiskey in it and then add a teasppon of hnoey and drink it. make sure u dont add the whiskey until after the milks been heated as then youll boil away the alcohol! its a recipe my mum used to use and i swear by it or another one would be inhalation of vicks or olbas, something like that as its antibacteriel and will kill any nasty germs in the lungs CINDY74
