Does anybody reading this know the length of time it takes for the contraceptive pill to start working??? My mum told me that you ought to wait several weeks to allow the medication to work through your body - but she hasnt been on it for donkey years....

I am really thinking about starting a course of ortho triyclin and of course id like to learn as much about it as possible....like for example, is it true that i will experience mood swings and may even get a little depressed?? Apprently also you put on more weight when you go on the pill??

Thanks   All replies are really well appreciated - i'll answer them all thanks again Z0x0x0

you may have to try a couple of pills to determine which one is right for you - i found that you put on weight and get a bit of acne if you are on the wrong ones but on the right ones you will be ok - they seem to take effect immediately but i guess they probablt all vary greatly - i would recommend you try microgynin - but who am i to recommend??

Hiya Zoey.  If you start the pill on the first day of your period you are protected from pregnancy straight away.  If you start on any other day it will take a month to start working and you will have to use another method(mainly condom) while you wait the 4 weeks.

Some women can experience mood swings and depression and even weight gain(hopefully not all at once lol)but if you are affected you can ask to try a different one, theres loads.

Just to let you know, the pill can make your periods different, usually for the better ie lighter and more regular but be aware that the bleeds you get on the 7 day break are just a "withdrawl bleed" and not a true reflection of your own periods.

Hope this helps XX

do you not thing that being on the pill lessens the female desire to have sex a little? I am convinced by this....my two last gfriends went on the pill and immediately the level of sex tapered off...

Hiya I didn't know the pill takes 4 week's to kick in ! I thought you could have sex straight away ?

I find my mood swings are worse when I'm not on the pill , I originally went on the pill to stop my period's being so heavy & I used to get really bad back pain aswell . I was originally on Loginon then Marvalon , Microginon & am now on the mini pill which is called Microval ,It's the best I've been on but you have to take it dead on time & can't miss taking it for long or you could get pregnant . Women usually get put on the mini pill after having A baby as there's not many hormones in it , My son's now 5 & I've had no problem's with this pill so far .

Hope this helps, Regards Sam

Sorry to be Off Topic and being a guy on your forum but could someone tell me if the pill completely stops all period factors...i.e. the mood swings and all that razzamatazz? IE Does taking the pill mean that i wont get my head bitten off once a month? Im only asking cause my girlfreind is a fiesty one and literally explodes once a month, maybe i could get her to crack on with the pill cause at the moment we are using togs.

Hey.
Its safe to make sure use condoms for 1st 7 days on the pill =] , also if your sick,on antibiotics it cancells out your pill !! which is something the doc forgets to mention from time to time, mood swings and weight gain are common, i found primrose oil tablet every morning helped with the mood swings thankfully or we woukd have no cupboard doors left lol.

also try out a few types of pill , normally your ment to come on on ur 1st missed day of the pill - this dont always happen thou. if you dont have your ' week break' then you may not get a period - handy but not very healthy =] .
Good luck with it .
