Everyone has a story to tell about how they quit smoking. Research shows that different people have different levels of addiction to nicotine and other people have a stronger pyschological addiction to smoking.

How did I quit? Well, it wasn't easy but for me it was more of a mental battle as opposed to a physical thing because I rarely missed smoking in the day and really only wanted to smoke with a drink.
I realised that for me to quit properly I'd have to quit when out at night drinking as opposed for going smoke free for a week or 2 by avoiding going out. I learnt not to make a big deal of cigarettes and convinced myself that they were insignificant and that I didn't actually really want one that badly.
On News Year's Eve I told myself to be completely relaxed and went out to a smoky bar. I went outside a couple of times to get some fresh air during the evening and when I went home at 4am I felt amazing. I knew that if I could do it once, (and I had failed many times) I could do it everytime.
I still get the urge to light up when partying and a little voice tells me that one puff wont do any harm but I know that mentally all my resistance will come crashing down if I have just a tiny puff and that soon I'll be back on them again.
The sense of achievement and control that not smoking gives me is amazing and I think of this everytime I am tempted to light up again. Quitting is a personal battle that you have to fight alone and you cant make excuses. At the end of the day you have to do it your way....

I only smoked in my youth because I was taken in by peer pressure.  I didn't really pick up the habit so count myself lucky really.

and jamey...

it is not cool to smoke. you will eat your words one day when you have a black lunch and asthmar and a world of health problems like erectile dysfunction and the like.  Then you won't think it is so cool.

The fact is most smokers want to quit... but they can't and so they pretend that they actually choose to smoke. It is admirable to try and make the best of a bad situation and put a positive spin on smoking if you can't give up, but the reality is that you are a slave to nicotine and statistically cigarettes are likely to kill you, slowly and painfully. Now that's so bloody cool, I mean wow, woo hoo, high five and all that....

Well i believe in the right to free expression.  And JohnnyT you just contradicted yourself, if you believe in the expression to each their own then you shouldn't get so uptight about me expressing my OWN opinion....

i quit becuase i got a bit of a scare.  I started having heart pulpitations and my fitness was so bad, i was puffed after climing a small flight of stairs.  I quit because the scare pushed me to quitting and i feel so better for it.  I feel like I have a new lease on life.

I had to use Champix at first because i craved nicotene so badly that i would get so wound up if i didn't get my fix.  It took me a few months but feel great and satisfied.

I know it isn't an easy thing to do if you have been smoking for years but you won't believe how amazing you feel once you have kicked the habit.
