hi, my firend told me about this site. She mentioned about Champix. I am a very heavy smoker, I put my hands up. But I am ready to give up. I've not tried Champix before. Is anyone else new to this and just trying it? Be good to have a chat about it. Thanks, Claribelle

Hi Clarebell, Yes. I have tried Champix. I did the whole course. I do recommend it. I'm a living example that it works. I went from smoking up to 40 a day for almost 50 years. People think that there was almost no point giving up so late in life, but I feel great now. Much better than ever. Wish I'd done it sooner. I'm officially a non smoker now thanks to Champix, so I hope that help you reach a decision about it. Digger

Hi Claribelle, I was on 30 a day but have managed with these "tablets of destiny" to give up without it being as traumatic as I thought it would be to give up after 30 years of smoking enjoyment ! I would recommend them to anybody but would also recommend you seeing your nhs support group for some counselling before you start. they gave me a book to read which was v.helpful. Go for it

Did you just try the course once? A few people seem to have had to do it more than once. It's a big financial committment and if it didn;t work Id be pretty p**** off! I haven't thought about contacting the NHS support group, I probably should. I just dont know if I could take their moralising. It would make me feel too bad about myself. Good for you guys for quitting though.

This was a once only attempt, the first time I've ever tried to give up due to fear of failure and fear of the monster I may have become. It was so much easier than I anticipated, I was a bit spaced out ( very laid back and not at all panicky ! ) the first couple of weeks but fine and normal after that. I too do not take kindly to moralising - my counsellor was great and to be honest there was no moralising, it was all about how I was being affected and helpful hints as to how to cope with any cravings etc. It wasn't necessary to go every week but nice to know the support was there if I needed it ( which I didn't ! ). Go for it

Hi, I am on day 24 of Champix and I am doing ok. Somedays are harder than others but i just think of something else. I have had to have a puff a couple of times because it was driving me mad but had the puff and felt sick.

just give it a try, if you really want to give up but it still needs a bit of will power

i feel guilty, i should have started on champix when I said I was going to! Now I'm three months down the lines a probably almost a grand poorer. i was very down and just couldnt give up my crutch. All my mates told me to stick champix on the back burner til I was strong enough. theres no point taking it and not being able to do it properly because my mind is all over the place and im miserable! im feeling a lot better now and loads stronger. so this is a good time and im starting today.
