I lost a very good friend last week. She had a stroke and the doctor said it was directly related to smoking. she smoked even more than I did. 50 a day. She'd always play it down to her doctor though. Say it was just 10. Mercifully it was quick. But she was only 65. If she hadn't smoked she would have had another twenty years in her possibly. Hearing her young grandkids reading poems to their Nan at the service was very, very sad. Because it was so unnecessary. That's one of the main reasons I gave up smoking. Because of my grandkids. My daughter didnt want them coming to visit because I smoked in the house. It worked though. They are too important to me. I didn't want to take any pills, but I knew I had to try something strong to get me off fags. And it worked. I haven't smoked since last April. Noone wants to nag people about giving up. Smokers don't want to hear either. For some reason, I never even listened to my kids when they were young, begging me not to smoke. But I'm so glad that I finally wised up. It might buy me a bit more time. I think of what a wonderful woman who has been lost because of pointless cigarettes. Its heartbreaking.

Hi Digger, so sorry about your friend. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice or first hand experience of giving up smoking but I do know about losing people to it. I lost my Dad, my father in law and my Aunt all too early. Nearly all my immediate family and their partners smoke and my eldest sister (64) needs an inhaler all the time and my youngest brother (52) has had treatment recently for cardio vascular problems. Plus my Mum has a mild form of emphysema directly as a result of living with my Dad's smoking and has inhalers and gets out of breath. I know nagging doesn't help but you have to show people you care otherwise you might live to regret not saying anything. I'm so glad I never started smoking.

Thank you for that quick response. You have really had more than your fair share of smoking related illnesses. It's really shocking that it should be allowed. It can't be far off that smoking gets banned. Regardless of the duties on cigarettes or the power of the tobacco companies. It costs the NHS a fortune and hurts so many of us. If I was to discover that I'd contributed to any illness affecting my wife I would be devastated. So far she's healthy, which is remarkable given how much I smoked. You are right - we do need to work harder at convincing smokers to stop. Your post alone might make any forum readers look at themselves, so thank you. I wish your Mum all the best.

Thank you Digger and all the best to you and your wife and beloved family. I just wish it had never been invented ! Extreme measures should be taken to ban it completely but how ? I just don't know. Well done to you Digger, you are an inspiration to others. Jen X
